Is this just breathing hard into a piece of plastic?
No — and the difference is the entire point. Breathing hard with no resistance is cardio for muscles that are already easy to satisfy. The calibrated ring forces your diaphragm and intercostals to generate real pressure against a measured restriction, which is what drives adaptation.
Same reason curling air doesn't build biceps. Load is the variable.
How fast will I notice anything?
The first session you'll feel muscles working in your ribs and upper abdomen that you've never consciously felt — that's the signal it's loading correctly. Most people report level one feeling noticeably easier inside the first two weeks of daily use, which is your cue to move up.
Respiratory muscles adapt like any other muscle: consistently, not overnight. Five minutes daily beats twenty minutes on Sundays.
Is it hygienic? Can I share it?
The housing is sealed, non-porous, food-grade, and completely free of foam, fabric, or filters — there is nothing inside for moisture or residue to live in. Rinse under warm water after use and stand it upright to air dry. Weekly, wash with mild soap.

Will the resistance ring wear out or loosen?
The barrel is a threaded, machined-tolerance assembly rather than a friction clip, so it holds its setting through repeated adjustment and doesn't drift mid-session. No springs, membranes, or electronics — the parts that fail on cheaper trainers are parts this doesn't have.
